Initial Commit: The first post of the Prohairetic blog
Free Form post published onWelcome! This is the first post published on the Prohairetic blog. I will detail below my intentions with the blog and other important aspects.
Purpose
I think it's important to always keep in mind the purpose of what we do, lest we spend our time on useless or even bad things. Following are some of the goals I had in mind:
- writing will help me clarify and develop the ideas in my head; and will slowly improve my ability to express them in a coherent, concise, and persuasive manner
- establishing a presence on the Internet in a way that grants me as much freedom as possible with respect to the form and content I want to publish
- over the years, my articles will become a history of my personal development, offering snapshots of my ability to write and of my interests and opinions over the time
Name
Prohairetic is an adjective derived from the Ancient Greek word prohairesis, which is an essential concept in the stoic philosophy, especially in the teachings of Epictetus. It means the capacity for deliberate or reasoned choice and can be related to the more modern concept of "free will". Epictetus describes it as the only thing that is truly ours, truly in our power, for it cannot be constrained or controlled from the outside, not even by the gods.
I chose this name as a reminder for myself to keep following the philosophy. This website is not necessarily dedicated to it, but I will try to point out potential connections when writing posts.
Structure
The blog is part of my personal Internet domain, fnovac.ro. It will be hosted under the "blog" subdomain, as I intend to have other sites too. I already have a FreshRSS instance on freshrss.fnovac.ro, but it is currently a private instance. fnovac.ro itself currently redirects to this blog, but eventually I might write a page with some global information and links to the subdomains.
As for the content of the blog, it will have mainly two kinds of pages: posts and section. The important difference is that the content of the posts (or we can call them articles) is not changed after publishing, save for correcting serious mistakes such as false claims or misleading statements. If I come to realise that a post needs serious improvements, updates, or developments, I shall write and publish a new post. On the other hand, sections serve as permanent places for certain topics, and can be updated as needed. The page you are reading now is a post. Examples of sections are the "About" and "Contact" pages.
Additionally, each post will be assigned a number of "tags", in order to easily find other similar posts. For example, this post has the admin tag, as its subject is the blog itself, hence this is a kind of meta-post. If you click any of the tags, you will get to a page listing all the other posts having this tag.
Topics
In spite of being a software engineer, I don't think that engineering or technology in general will be the topic for most of the articles. I have had many interests in different domains over the years, and I will simply write about what I consider important at a given moment.
Language
The main language of the blog is English, but I intend to write in Romanian too, especially for topics of interest only for Romanian speakers. I can also produce decent French text, but it won't be pleasant for me to write, neither for you to read.
Graphical design and style
Initially, the site will look very bland and simplistic, but the design is not my focus at this moment. I don't want to waste time on minute details when I don't even have an article posted. However, I do intend to make incremental changes over the time to make it look more pleasant.
Technicalities
I want to avoid talking too much about the blog, as some people that I follow do. However, I list below some details for the more technically inclined (accurate at the moment of publishing):
- this site is served by an Apache web server on a VPS. I wanted a VPS to be able to self-host any application that I want to access over the Internet
- this is a static site generated using the Hugo engine. As expected from the paragraph about design and style, I am not using any predefined themes. I use only the basic HTML templates that Hugo provides when creating a new project, which I will improve upon as I go
